Looking to buy a new rod and real. Have been looking at Greys Orion 13ft Mk2 and Diawa SLOSH 20. Does anyone have any advice on this gear or others that I should consider?
dont want to spend a fortune but also understand that you get what you pay for.
Am about 6ft 1 and 15 and a half stone. Use an overhead thump at the mo but looking to cast further.
Cheers Charlie

What sort of ground do you fish Charlie, or is it one rod and reel to do everything?

Have an old Century SC6 and Penn 535 Mag for proper rough ground. But am looking for something to fish clean and mixed ground. Want to begin to cast further with OTG then maybe pendulem. Have heard good reviews about the greys orion and SLOSH 20s seem to being a good real for the money, but also seen a lot of Penn deals on combos (power stix etc).
Looking to spend about £150- £180 for the pair. Any advice on anything in my price bracket would be appreciated.
Cheers Charlie

For clean to mixed ground I'd personally go with a Penn 525 reel and take a look at the Abu Conolon Exodus range of rods. For the money they are cracking and can handle mixed ground. www.poingdestres.co.uk/ProductDetails/mcs/productID/139/groupID/2/categoryID/6/v/1d1292ae-35cb-4442-b4fa-398453235c51I've heard a fair few horror stories about Greys beachcasters (tips snapping on the cast) so I avoid them, but others have had no problem and swear by them. The SLOSH is a bit of a rough ground reel and pretty fast, but they are cheap enough and will last forever just not as refined as the 525 range. Hope this helps. ;D

I've heard that small codling are starting to be picked up during a swell, but at the moment I'd be targeting the Holderness coast. Late season ray and doggies are being caught and the whiting are starting to show. Codling should be about after a blow.
